Learning to read

I still remember the moment when street signs were no longer mysteries, when the world reserved for adults suddenly became open to me. Of all milestones, learning to read is probably the most memorable because it is the first that most people can remember. The triumph of our first steps is reserved for our parents, but the pride a child feels when he realizes that he can see and understand is absolutely unique.
I’m writing all this because I just picked up my 5 year old from a friend’s house and on the way home she asked me, “Ema, what does ‘Lenox’ mean?”
Of course I had been sounding out words with her for months but this was the first time she had effortlessly read a sign on the road. (We had passed Lenox Mall)
My baby is growing up.
