I have just picked up The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold and I can’t breathe. I’m about half-way through and I had to give myself a break because the intensity of the writing was overwhelming. The author managed to capture the voice of a murdered 14 year old girl and bring out the emotions of her distraught family and her killer without ever stooping to tear-jerking melodrama or cliche. Even the portayal of the girl’s static “heaven” is brilliant. She keeps hinting that her afterlife will expand and I can’t wait to see how she does it. Occasionally the words the author chooses are a little too perfect for a teenager- but I love that too.

I also feel obligated to report in my continuing coverage of the upcoming S.H. film that I read a weird rumor today. I call it a rumor despite the fact that distraught fans everywhere are already wringing their hands and storing up rotten eggs. Apparently, Sascha Baron Cohen is slated to play Holmes, with Will Ferrell as Watson.
First of all, I cannot believe this is true. But if it is… come on, people, that is just awesome!  Stop whining- I really can’t imagine anything more hilarious.  Cohen is versatile, right? And stunning in a banana-hammock, really. And Ferrell in the American-flag thong– wow.
I’m there, and I’m bringing my sister along. (sorry, Dinah, you’re flying out to Israel to watch this one with me.)
